The Crafting Freedom Materials Project

View Videos

For each of the nine freedom crafters, there is a 2–5 minute web video. These vary in subject matter: two demonstrate the occupations of the freedom crafter (videos for Sally Thomas, a laundress and George Moses Horton, a poet–for–hire); six videos enact the words of the freedom crafter from an autobiography or other published work (i.e. William Henry Singleton, Henry "Box" Brown, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, David Walker, Harriet Jacobs, Elizabeth Keckly, and Lunsford Lane); and one video provides a short overview of the freedom crafter's life and the work he produced—furniture and interior architecture (Thomas Day). As with all the materials on this website, they can be used independently, in conjunction with extant lesson materials or with the provided lesson plans.
