One Noble Journey: A Box Marked Freedom (Excerpt)

The Crafting Freedom Materials Project

This short video is an excerpt from a one-man play featuring actor Mike Wiley. It is about the lives of several enslaved people who create ingenious plots to escape from slavery to freedom. This segment of the play is derived from the slave narrative of Henry "Box" Brown from Virginia who conceives of a plan to escape from Richmond to Philadelphia by having himself packed in a crate and shipped to the North. In this excerpt, we hear the blow by blow account of the events that led to Brown's daring plan to escape and what happened as he executed his plan.
