Boy Runaway

The Crafting Freedom Materials Project

This short video features a depiction of an elderly William Henry Singleton recalling his experience running away from where he was enslaved near Atlanta to the North Carolina plantation where he was born and where his mother was enslaved. Singleton executed this daring escape and long journey when he was only six or seven years of age. The elderly Singleton reflects on and describes the white and black people who assisted him along his route of escape.
