The Crafting Freedom Materials Project

Disclaimer for External Links and Non–Federal Resources

The Crafting Freedom website contains a variety of visual and textual material to be used for instructional purposes for which rights to use on the website have been acquired. However, there are a variety of links to other websites and references to resources available through government, non-profit, and commercial entities. External links to websites from the Crafting Freedom website and references to non-federal resources are provided mostly for informational purposes and for the convenience of the user. The Apprend Foundation does not control these sites or the resources they contain. These other sites may collect data or personal information. Once you link to another site, you are subject to the privacy policy of the new site. If you decide to access any site linked to this site, you do so entirely at your own risk. In addition, the external links and non-federal resources are in no way intended to represent an exhaustive listing.

Opinions and Interpretations

The Crafting Freedom website contains information gathered from many different sources. The opinions and interpretations expressed in the website do not necessarily state or reflect the views or policies of the funder (the National Endowment for the Humanities), the United States Government, or any agency, contractor, or subcontractor thereof.

Providing personal information on the Internet is completely voluntary, yet different websites may do different things with that information. Before providing any personal information, you should familiarize yourself with the Privacy Policy of the site collecting the information. Please read carefully the privacy policy of any third-party website to which you provide personal information. Since this website never asks for any personal information from users, there is not a privacy policy for this website.

Quality Control of Website Content and Website Links

All of the lesson plans and instructional material on this website have been rigorously field-tested in classrooms with 3rd-8th grade students or classroom tested by teachers who generously shared their instructional experiences with the Crafting Freedom design team. In addition, each lesson has been thoroughly reviewed by a scholar with expertise in African American history or African American literature.

Most of the websites that are linked to from this site have been highly rated and selected by a panel of experts designated by the Edsitement project of the National Endowment for the Humanities as very good websites. These were judged on the basis of educational excellence in the humanities and quality website design. In a few instances, websites that we linked to did not receive Edsitement's endorsement, because in those cases, the content required was not available at an Edsitement approved website. The few website links that were not selected by Edsitement met the quality standards of the Apprend Foundation.

This Crafting Freedom website provides a collection of resources and lesson plans that can be used by following a lesson plan (with suggested steps provided) or in a wholly customized fashion in a broad array of instructional settings. Because of the attention to quality in all the materials on this website, we believe that these materials will contribute to a very high quality instructional experience. However, the best way to ensure a high quality educational experience is to follow the field-tested "suggested steps" of the lesson plans provided. Crafting Freedom does not prescribe a specific course of study, nor advocate any specific educational theory.

We recognize that the World Wide Web is a dynamic, interactive, and exploratory environment for humanities education and that the humanities content of the linked sites may change and expand over time. The Apprend Foundation reserves the right to terminate any link at any time.
